Prepare thoroughly

One of the best ways to calm your nerves before an interview is by making sure you have prepared thoroughly.

Reread your cover letter and CV

Reread your cover letter and CV so you are prepared for questions the interviewer might ask based on your CV e.g. certain projects.

Prepare and practise your elevator pitch

Prepare and practise your elevator pitch for common interview questions such as “Tell me about yourself”.

Research the company

Research the company to show you have taken your time to really get to know the company and its culture.

Go through the job description

Familiarise yourself with the job description and the skills required to do the job.

Write a few points down on why you would be the best candidate and link your skills back to the job ad.

Practise your presentation (if applicable)

Make sure you have enough time to deliver your presentation and go through it to practise the way you will deliver it.

Prepare relevant and thoughtful questions to ask the hiring manager.

Get your outfit ready the night before and make sure you are dressed appropriately to create a great first impression.

For your interview, you want to feel refreshed and energised.

Getting a decent night’s sleep will help you feel calm and rested. So try to avoid staying up the night before your interview to go through answers as there is only so much prep you can do at this stage.

Exercise

Exercise is great as it releases endorphins that make you feel good. Whether you go for a run, do yoga or simply even going for a walk will help you feel relaxed.

Eat well

Make sure you eat well in the lead up to your interview as you want to feel energised so your mind and body work efficiently, ready for those tough questions.

Arrive on time

There’s nothing worse than feeling flustered when you arrive at an interview.

Make sure you leave with plenty of time to spare for your job interview and give yourself some time to relax when you get to your destination. You might even have some time to go through some of your answers again.
